Although they are still beloved characters, these ladies are no longer considered certified royalty. While Tinker Bell could be found on merch sprinkling her pixie dust over a lineup of official princesses, she is no longer considered an official Disney princess.

Esmerelda possesses many qualities of a princess, such as beauty, grace, fierceness, kindness, and empathy, but she is not of royal descent or relation. Jane Porter is the daughter of a professor, not a king, and the love interest of an ape-man, not a prince. No royalty here, but we still love her!

Well, after Elsa was crowned as queen of Arendelle, she then resigned to become the fifth spirit, and Anna took her place.

Elsa was once a princess before coronation as queen but has since become the fifth spirit. I know all this royal technicality may be confusing, but I suggest you just let it go. Giselle was never a princess, although she was engaged to be married to Prince Edward of Andalasia before being sent to our live-action universe.

She ends up marrying a divorce attorney, which is hardly grounds to consider her royalty— let alone an official princess. In fact, Belle takes time to get to know the beast and forms a relationship with him before ever falling in love.

At the end of the movie, as all fairy tales go, Belle and her prince now as a human as his curse was removed live happily ever after. While not the lead role in this Disney film, Aladdin, Princess Jasmine is the only princess who is not based on a fairy tale. Her father the Sultan, ruler of Agrabah, wants only the best for Jasmine and the people in his country. She is infuriated when she meets Aladdin, a street rat with questionable motives who makes false promises to win the heart of the princess in order to get what he wants.

Aladdin takes Jasmine on an epic journey filled with magic carpet rides, dangerous cave dives, and betrayal by his friend, Jafar. One day, an English ship sails into the bay and Pocahontas runs out to see it. Pocahontas and the other Indians are invited to board the ship, but Pocahontas is warned not to go.

But she gets kidnapped by Captain Smith who takes her back onto his boat. John Smith keeps Pocahontas a prisoner and there begins a friendship between the two. However, when she is almost discovered by another tribe of Native Americans, John Smith manages to get her back into the safety of the boat just in time. Pocahontas figures that if she can save John Smith from being captured by her people, then he will leave her land in peace. So, Pocahontas goes to negotiate with her father and she begs him not to harm John Smith.

Pocahontas knows that if she stays with the English sailors, she will never be accepted back into her tribe. So, she leaves with them, but not before making John Smith promise to come back for her if he ever wants to marry her. John Smith does manage to make it back for Pocahontas, but she has already fallen in love with another man during the time that he was away.

In the end, Pocahontas and John Smith part ways as friends, and the truth of their love is never confessed. After going through many struggles and obstacles, she helps stop a war between her people and the white settlers. She manages to maintain her strong, rooted foundation in her own culture while still learning about the new people that came into her life. These are lessons many of us can learn from Pocahontas.

Walt Disney created Pocahontas as a tribute to the Native Americans. In fact, Pocahontas is the first Disney princess based on an actual person in history. She ended up doing more than fighting for her country though. She saved it. Mulan was created during a time period where heroism, masculinity and honor were highly valued by the Chinese people.

Mulan did not fall in love with or marry a prince. Instead, she became a war hero and saved her entire country from danger. Brave, intelligent and kind. Mulan is an official Disney princess because she was willing to do whatever it takes to save her people. Princess Tiana is the first African American Disney princess. Before he died, Tiana promised him that she would continue to work hard and one day fulfill her dream.

However, nothing could stop this strong and powerful princess from reaching her dreams — not even a spoiled prince who turned into a frog.

A wicked witch doctor turned Prince Naveen into a frog. Mistakenly, Naveen thought Tiana was a princess because he saw her in a beautiful ball gown and thought a kiss from her would turn him back into his human form. Unfortunately, the kiss only turned Tiana into a frog herself. Tiana and Naveen spend most of their time in the movie as frogs. They run from alligators and make their way to the bayou where eventually they fall in love and get married. Their kiss transforms their bodies back to their human form.

Rapunzel spent all 18 years of her life stuck in a secluded tower. The first time Rapunzel meets Flynn, she screams at him and throws a frying pan at his head. He had just stolen her intended crown from the palace and found this tower to hide out in. Rapunzel knocks him out cold and finds this crown in his bag.

She tells him he can get it back if he takes her to see the lanterns the king and queen release each year. Mother Gothel finds Rapunzel and takes her home telling her that she is the only one that Rapunzel can trust. At this same time, Rapunzel is putting two and two together and realizes the connection between the lantern festival and what she is painting on the walls of her tower.
